We called for an appointment because our upstairs unit hasn't been able to keep the rooms cool. We were quoted $125 as a service fee -- I remember this specifically because I thought I heard "$135" and when I asked if that was right, they said "No, $125."
The two men who came out were friendly, and I have no complaints against them. We were told that while the filters needed changed and the outdoor unit needed to be cleaned and maintained, the likely culprit was most likely the outside unit not being powerful enough for the space., but they said we would notice a difference in a few days because of the maintenance. We were charged $475. They said if nothing changed, to give them a call in a few days and they'll come back.
We received the receipt a few days later and I realized we were charged $175 for the service fee, not $125 as quoted. We also did not notice any change at all. After a few days, we called Mitchell to ask about sending someone out again and we were told that, based on their diagnosis, it wouldn't be worth it because the unit wasn't strong enough. We decided to call a different company for a second opinion. He charged $95 for the service fee, and within a few minutes he identified the casual culprit.
I e-mailed Mitchell to ask about the $50 difference in fee and they said they would honor the quoted price -- but two months later, I haven't seen a refund and my e-mails have gone unanswered.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tim G.Washington, DC03Dec 14, 2022
I had used Mitchell Heating once before for a general maintenance check a couple years ago and was pleased, so I called them again to address a heating issue. The technician showed up, looked at a few things, commented that my system was old, and never really explained what was wrong. By the time he left he said several components needed the be replaced but was unable to explain how they'd specifically address the issue I was having. He still charged a $175 service fee (was not discussed up front) which he said would credit towards doing the work when they sent over the quote. Never received the quote, and there was no follow up from them. I felt scammed. I ended up calling another company. Their person came and methodically tested every part in my system for functionality, isolated the issue and then proceeded to repair it. Wouldn't use Mitchell again.

Made four different appointments to have someone from Mitchell come to our house to assess our in-wall attic air conditioner setup and provide options to replace. First appointment was changed by them from a Friday to a Saturday. They didn't show up on Saturday. When I called they told me "it had not been assigned to anyone". I made another appointment for Monday and again no one showed up. When I called, I was told the tech had a car accident. The last appointment was for Tuesday and again a no show. I didn't bother calling again. Never got a phone call. Just text messages asking me to confirm. No way to run a business.

I had to call Mitchell Heating at 10pm when my air conditioner broke during the middle of a heat wave. It was 95 degrees in the house and I was worried my cats would die of heatstroke. I had called 5 different HVAC companies that claimed to be "24 hour service" and Mitchell Heating was the only place that actually answered. They dispatched Nathan, who was polite, professional, and immediately diagnosed the problem. He quoted a fair price, despite the emergency callout and the fact that I was desperate and would have paid twice as much. He even put up with a convoluted key-swapping scheme with my neighbor as I was out of town at the time. My house is cool, my cats are safe, and from now on Mitchell Heating will always be my first call for heating and cooling issues. I can't recommend them enough.

If there were a way to give less than one star I would. Similar to another customer's review the first technician sent to assess our system didn't seem to know what the problem was but just proposed random solutions without confidence that they would actually fix the problem. When he finally settled on what he believed the problem was he came with the correct part to install. We have a smart thermostat and during the installation the tech repeatedly said things like "I prefer the traditional thermostats to these smart thermostats." "You know more than I do about this system!" While he was fixing the problem the thermostat had several readout errors about a 'install error' related to the wiring and voltage of the system which he seemed very confused by. He finished the installation and the system was running, though not heating well, when he left. Twenty-four hours later the entire system shut down and the thermostat went black. We requested a new technician to come back and he diagnosed the new issue as a blown transformer. We spoke with the owner and they claimed that these two problems were completely unrelated and that we would need to pay for the additional work before they fixed the problem. This was all happening the day before a snow storm and with no heat in our home. The customer service and level of professionalism at this business is appalling.

I wish I had just lit $1800 on fire instead of ever getting involved with Mitchell Heating. The tech never really seemed like he knew what the problem was, but he was happy to replace random parts and when that didn't work he recommended replacing the entire system. When I asked why we should replace a unit they had just performed almost $2,000 of service on, they told me my 6-year old AC system was "obsolete" and that sometimes you have to "spend money to figure out what the problem is." Back to square one, I guess.

When our central air stopped working on the hottest day of the year, July 3rd, we found ourselves in good hands with Mitchell Heating. Don and Thomas were at our house within an hour of my call to diagnose the problem. When it was determined to be an issue with our aging furnace, they took the time to make some repairs. Unfortunately, we needed to replace the furnace... Shortly after, the new furnace was installed and our home has never been more comfortable. Excellent customer service, and great people to work with!
